Research Trainee Opportunity: Mental Health Data

We invite applications for a research traineeship focused on mental health projects in southern Africa to gain hands-on experience.
About the Traineeship
This is a 6-month, full-time, paid traineeship that offers an opportunity to gain direct research experience by working with data from clinical trials and cohort studies on mental health and health behaviors. The selected candidate will utilize and further develop data analysis skills, contribute to academic writing, and gain insights into an academic career (such as pursuing a PhD). The candidate should be available to start in April or May 2025. Flexible working hours and hybrid working conditions are offered. Candidates should be available to work at least 2x/week in person at our office in Basel.
Main Responsibilities
• Conduct data analysis on clinical trials and cohort studies related to mental health and health behaviors
• Perform literature searches and summarize key findings
• Assist in manuscript preparation and contribute to academic publications
Who Should Apply?
We are looking for candidates who:
• Have a Master’s degree in a social science, health, or data-related field
• Have a strong interest in mental health research
• Are comfortable working with quantitative data, including clinical and longitudinal study designs
• Have an interest in academic writing and publishing
• Are detail-oriented, self-motivated, and eager to learn

Who We Are
You would work within the Global Mental Health Research Group, led by Dr. Jennifer Belus at the University of Basel/ University Hospital Basel. The research group focuses on improving mental health and health-related behaviors among vulnerable populations, such as people living with HIV, in low-resource settings. It is based in the Division of Clinical Epidemiology, an interdisciplinary division that aims to enhance clinical research by generating high-quality evidence for decision-making in healthcare and social programs.
