Historical Karate Study Group
Join us in a unique study of traditional karatedo and its methods and applications before the advent of modern sports karate and combat.
If you are dedicated to gaining a deeper understanding of karate's roots and are committed to exploring its original purpose and applications, we invite you to join our karate study group. The focus of the group is to explore the traditional forms and techniques as they were practiced before modern adaptations to the art (approximately from the 1930s to the present day).
Through the study of traditional kata/型 (combative forms), we examine and extract the rich kihon/基本 (fundamentals) and waza/技 (techniques) that make up the broader karatedo curriculum.
By focusing on the original techniques and movements found within the kata, we explore bunkai/分解 (combative applications) and engage in detailed analysis of these methods for practical self-defense and civilian combat scenarios, which reflect the original intent of this system.
Our aim is to uncover and learn about the historical development of karate and its evolution into an effective system of combat. Doing so allows us to engage in practical kumite/組手 (sparring/drills), with an emphasis on applying traditional techniques in realistic situations.
The program is open to practitioners of all styles and is suitable for all experience levels. Classes will be tailored around individual topics and lectures, which can be integrated into one's own practice. Members are also encouraged to present their own ideas and topics, using this group as a platform to experiment and develop their combative portfolio.
Age Requirement: Participants must be 18 years or older. However, in exceptional circumstances, this may be reduced to 16 years with parental and instructor consent.
Please note, this group focuses on study and practice without the awarding of ranks. The goal is to promote a focused exploration and improvement of individual technical prowess. We prioritize a dedicated and respectful approach to learning, while still cultivating a pragmatic, real-world approach to self-defense and personal protection.
Class Times: Tuesday and Thursday evenings (18:00-20:00)
Fees: CHF 150 per month or CHF 20 per class
Location: Near Liestal (please contact the instructor for specific details)
We look forward to your participation and shared commitment to the study of traditional karatedo!
